Spring is finally here! Days are getting longer and brighter, winter coats are being put away, flowers are blooming, and allergies are…dooming. Whether you have been suffering previously from cedar or your allergy symptoms are just starting, it can be a difficult experience – especially for our little ones. But, how do you differentiate between allergy symptoms and other illnesses? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers some helpful insight on how to recognize allergy symptoms in your child. If your child experiences any of the following symptoms for more than a week or two around the same time of the year, this is most likely an indicator of seasonal allergies. These symptoms may include:
- Nasal stuffiness
- Runny nose
- Sneezing
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Sniffling
- Nose rubbing/itching
- Throat clearing
In order to help you and your kiddos navigate this harsh allergy season, here are a few tips and tricks that I use with my own kids to help relieve their allergy symptoms!
- Humidifier with cold water.
- Saline washes of the nose. These can be done with a nasal flush system such as a Netti pot.
- Showering when coming inside to remove pollen.
- Changing out sheets and pillow covers regularly to remove pollen.
- Taking over-the-counter medication such as children’s zyrtec or other antihistamine. Flonase nasal sprays are also very effective. Consult your pediatrician prior to use and use as directed.
If your child is suffering from a stuffy nose or their allergies are just not improving, don’t hesitate to make an appointment! I would love to help make spring a fun time where we can be outdoors enjoying all of nature’s beauty.”
