What Do I Need to Know About Measles?

Measles symptoms typically start with fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. This is followed by small white spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots) and a red, blotchy rash that begins on the face and spreads to the body within 3–5 days.

Is My Child Vaccinated Against Measles?

The CDC recommends the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella). Children should receive two doses: the first between 12–15 months, and the second between 4–6 years. During an outbreak or before international travel, the first dose may be given as early as 6 months (to be repeated after 12 months).

The MMR vaccine is 97% effective with two doses and 93% effective with one dose. Insurance coverage for early doses may vary; please contact your provider for details.

How Is Measles Treated?

There is no specific antiviral treatment for measles. Instead, supportive care is essential. Follow these guidelines:

  • Hydration: Ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids (water, oral rehydration solutions, clear soups).
  • Nutrition: Provide a balanced diet and offer small, frequent meals if appetite is poor.
  • Fever Management: Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen to reduce fever and discomfort. Avoid aspirin due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
